BEFORE YOU BUY AN IN - GROUND BASKETBALL HOOPS:
There are restrictions
Make sure that the law allows you to install the basketball court in your yard. Many HOAs have strict rules against "unsightly noises." You don’t want to buy a costly basketball hoop and have to replace it a few days later. If permanent basketball hoops are not allowed, check out my article about portable basketball hoops.
Locate underground utility lines
Permanent basketball hoops require a very deep hole, usually 48 inches. Be sure to check for underground utilities before you place the hoop. There is an online service that will help you find safe places to dig.
Dimensions for the court
Measure the dimensions of your driveway, yard, or any other location where you intend to install the basketball hoop. A basketball court for the NBA is 50ft x47ft. For high school, 50ftx42ft. But your court doesn’t need to be that large. Let's consider a typical court with a 2ft overhang (distance of goal post to backboard), and 2ft between the hoop and the height adjustment device. The high school 3-point lines are 19'9" from each other. Therefore, a court of 27 feet is needed to allow at least 3 feet between the line and the hoop.
If you don’t have a lot of space and your court’s dimensions are smaller, you might opt for a smaller hoop, with a lower overhang, and a smaller board. Your court doesn't shrink more, and it doesn't look totally out of place.
HOW TO CHOOSE AN IN - GROUND BASKETBALL
There are many options to choose from if you decide to buy an indoor basketball. The main differences in these are the thickness, size, material, and length of the backboard. Let's look closer:
Support Pole
Installation of a Support Pole
The support pole acts as the base for every basketball hooper and is responsible to ensure its stability. Sometimes, cheaper hoops have a multi-piece supporting pole. This allows the bottom to be inserted directly in a 24'' hole. This installation can be quite tricky. It is important to ensure that the pole is straight.
The anchor kit comes with more expensive hoops. The anchor kits are the same construction as any in-ground basketball hoops. Usually, you will need a digging depth 48''. This means you'll need between 8-25 bags and 80lbs of concrete.
The best thing about this construction is that you can easily levelize the backboard by changing the nuts below the anchor plate.
Thickness of Support Pole:
You want the pole to be as sturdy as possible to keep the shaking of the hoop after shots (or dunks) to a minimum. Cheaper hoops often come with thinner support poles (3.5″ round diameter) lacking the necessary stability for a professional playing experience.
The top-of-the-class hoop in this article needs a massive 6″ x 6″ pole to support its heavy 72-inch tempered glass backboard. A support pole like that eliminates almost all wobbling. Even Shaquille O’Neal himself could dunk on this hoop
